Material S355 Meaning (Designation)

The following letters and numbers explains steel grade S355 meaning:

  • “S” is the abbreviation of “Structural steel”;
  • “355” indicates the minimum yield strength value for the flat and long steel thickness ≤ 16mm;
  • “JR” means the impact energy value is minimum 27 J at room temperature (20°C);
  • “J0” indicates the steel can withstand the impact energy at least 27 J at 0°C;
  • “J2” denotes the minimum impact energy value is 27 J at -20°C;
  • “K2” denotes the minimum impact energy value is 40 J at -20°C.
  • J4: minimum 27J at -40 °C
  • J5: minimum 27J at -50 °C
  • M: Thermomechanically rolled
  • N: Normalized or normalized rolled
  • L: Low temperature
  • W: Weather resistant
  • C: Special cold forming
  • H: Hollow section
  • G: Other characteristics, if required, with 1 or 2 digits.
  • P: Sheet piling
  • P (EN 10025-5): For the grade with a greater phosphorus content (only in the case of S355 grade)
  • D: Hot dip coating
  • +Z: Hot dip zinc (galvanized) coating

S355 Steel Properties and Specification

The tables below show the material grade S355 steel properties and specification according to EN 10025-2 standard, including chemical composition, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation, etc.

Chemical Composition

The datasheet below shows material S355 chemical composition based on heat analysis.

S355 Chemical Composition (%, ≤)
Standard Steel Grade C Si Mn P S Cu N Method of deoxidation
EN 10025-2 S355 S355JR 0.24 0.55 1.60 0.035 0.035 0.55 0.012 Rimmed steel is not allowed

S355K2 0.20 0.55 1.60 0.025 0.025 0.55

Remarks:

  • For S355J0, S355J2 and S355K2: C ≤ 0.22% for thickness > 30 mm.
  • C by agreement for profiles with a nominal thickness > 100 mm.
  • For long products, the P and S content can be 0.005% higher.
