AISI ASTM 430 Stainless Steel Heat Treatment

  • Annealing: Recommended annealing treatment for 430 steel is 705-790 °C (1300-1450 °F).
  • Forging: Typical forging temperature for SS430 is 815-1120 °C (1500-2050 °F).

Maximum service temperatures, °C (°F)
AISI Intermittent service Continuous service
430 870 (1600) 815 (1500)

Welding

The ductility of type 430 stainless steel (SS430) is lower than that of austenite type, so weld cracking is more likely to occur, and a large amount of martensite is formed during cooling after welding, thereby increasing the sensitivity to cold cracking. It is recommended to preheat at a temperature of 150-230 °C to minimize weld cracking.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 430 stainless steel (SS430) is suitable for use in mild atmospheres, as well as in mild oxidizing acids and organic acids. Type 430 stainless steel is limited in sulfuric acid environment; AISI 302 or 304 stainless steel replaces AISI 430 grade stainless steel in industrial environments; In food processing environment, AISI 304 is commonly used; Marine environment, heavily polluted atmosphere, chemicals and more severe corrosives require AISI 316 stainless steel or higher alloyed materials
